Hotspot questions are a visual way of asking questions or assessing participant knowledge. Participants are presented with a picture on which they can select the area that matches a question. This enables you to determine whether participants are able to recognize and assign objects correctly, for example.
Setting up a hotspot question with multiple click areas
A hotspot question works very simply. You just upload an image and define the correct and incorrect areas in the image. You create new areas with “+ Add selection”. You can edit existing fields by clicking them. You can drag the edges of the areas to adjust the size.
Hotspot questions are graded automatically, making them low-maintenance for trainers.
How do hotspot questions work?
Any image can be uploaded for use in a hotspot question.
You then define the correct area where the searched area can be seen.
In the test question, you ask the participant to click on the defined area in the image. If the participant clicks on the correct area, positive feedback is returned, such as: “Correct, this is the laptop”.
Correct vs. incorrect areas
In addition to the “correct” area, you can also define “incorrect” areas. Logically, undefined areas are also incorrect areas, except they have no feedback other than “Too bad”.
If you would like to provide more meaningful feedback, you can enter this in the red highlighted (i.e. incorrect), areas.
Just like the other question types, with hotspot questions you can specify the number of attempts the participant can make to answer the question.
Tip: Vary the question types used throughout the course. This makes it more interesting for learners and appeals to different types of learners. Varying the question types (e.g. using text or image files) enables you to cover the different ways that people learn. This ensures that there is something for every user.
